This is a very interesting game not only in idea but also in execution. It is also a game that will not peak everyone’s interest, but those that do fall into its dirt cladden paws; they struggle to get out again. The game is oddly addictive and very engaging, truly; an experience to behold.
To many the Far Cry experience has mainly been about engaging characters and an interesting narrative featuring some psychotic or straight up lunatic characters. This title strays a bit from that benchmark and instead focuses on the core gameplay mechanic that it offers. And it does a fantastic job at that too, offering some of the most engaging combat and movement options we’ve seen in a long while.
The premise is relatively simple, at its core the title feels very much like a fast paced survival game with many of those elements worked into the title, yet not so that it becomes annoying. In large parts the game becomes very much about building up your community of survivalists and upgrading your home location into a fortress of sorts. This coupled with the relatively engaging storyline and the survival elements makes for quite a curious mix that manages to keep one very entertained.
You play as a tribal man who has a gift of connecting with the animals he comes across. This ability allows you to control some of the animals that you encounter, which becomes a large mechanic in gameplay. You also have an owl companion that is used for scouting and stealth attacks. These pets make up a large part of your attacking prowess as a player and when used wisely can be very effective.
The game manages to be visually appealing however it fails to be one of the standout titles in that regard among current competitors. While many of the details are very appealing and the world and scenery are definitely well made and visually sound, it just lacks that wow factor when you look at it. This doesn’t mean that the game is ugly however, it more than manages to hold its own; but it also never really rises above the competition here. The large open scenes do make some inspiring moments at times.
The character handles as one would expect, guile and speed as much a part of the journey as skill and dexterity is; which makes for an amazing time. There have been very few awkward control moments in the game, very few glitch situations. While, this is not an achievement on its own; it holds some merit in today’s rushed market with many releases falling apart in that department. Walking, running, climbing and even scaling cliffs with the grappling hook system feels fast and efficient and adequately polished. It’s a blast to participate in.
The combat is fast and brutal and often much more difficult than it appears when the fight starts. Overall the game presents a challenge but never really becomes too difficult to handle, at most difficulties. The combat is smooth and fluent and either fast or intermittent depending on your weapon of choice. It is definitely one of the best games in the market at this stage in that regard.
The player is offered a huge variety of skills to choose from as the journey to expand the tribal population descends further into the pre historic themed locations. Upgrade anything from carrying capacity to total health as the experience points pile up. The weapons are upgradeable to and there are different tiers for each weapon type. This adds a lot of longevity to the combat experience. There are also throw able weapons like bombs or shards of stone.
As a verdict it could be said that while this title will only please a specific niche of the overall market, it is very much a worthy addition to the Far Cry franchise and is an incredibly profound and enjoyable experience.
