Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based role-playing game (RPG) set in a dark fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France, called Lumiere. The central premise revolves around a horrifying annual event known as the “Gommage.” Each year, a mysterious entity called The Paintress awakens and paints a progressively lower number on a massive monolith. Everyone in Lumiere who is that age or older vanishes instantly, erased from existence.

The game follows the titular Expedition 33, a group of volunteers, including the protagonist Gustave, who are setting out on a desperate mission to find and destroy The Paintress before she can paint the number “33” and cause their own demise (as many of the expedition members are around that age). This expedition is the latest in a long line of previous attempts, all of which have failed. As the players progress, they uncover the fates of these past expeditions and the deeper lore behind the Gommage and The Paintress.

The gameplay features classic turn-based combat with real-time elements, such as quick-time events for dodges and parries, keeping players engaged during enemy turns. Each character in the party has unique abilities and skill trees, encouraging strategic combat and character building. The game also boasts stunning visuals, thanks to Unreal Engine 5, and a melancholic yet beautiful soundtrack.
